Temperate grasslands develop in areas where the summer and winter temperatures vary. Summers are often hot and winters cold. The grass has to be able to stand the strong winds blowing across the land as no trees grow to provide shelter.

Temperate grassland generally has less rain than tropical grassland.

The Veldt in South Africa is one area of temperate grassland. In North America is an area of grassland called the Prairies. In Asia there is an area of grassland called the Steppes. In South America there is the Pampas. The soil in temperate grasslands is deeper and richer than that of the tropical grasslands.

Wildflowers grow amongst the grasses.
