General menu Bulbs RHIZOMES
types
Like corms, rhizomes are underground stems. The difference is that a rhizome grows sideways from the main plant. Like a corm it is solid. New shoots can develop along the length of the rhizome. Irises and cannas produce rhizomes. Many grasses such as couch grass also produce rhizomes. This type of grass is very difficult to remove from flower beds as if just a tiny piece of rhizome is left in the ground, new plant growth will be produced. Notice the stems sprouting from the rhizome of the aspidistra.
