As with carrots the first pair of  ‘seed’ leaves are a completely different shape to the leaves that follow. As the parsnip seedlings grow, some will need pulling out.

This is called thinning and it makes room for the parsnips to grow. Care needs to be taken when doing this that the roots of the remaining seedlings are not damaged.
