Spring Cabbage in December

I have to admit I'm not very good at successional sowings. I don't do too badly with lettuce but that's about it. During the summer I had one row of potatoes that really suffered in the dry summer weather. By early July it looked like a crop failure. I started digging small new potatoes at the beginning of July clearing the ground by the beginning of August.

Our potatoes partially dug by the middle of July

I sowed some spring cabbage, broccoli and lettuce in modules. They were up within days and ready for planting out by early August. The lettuce did fine lasting through September and into October. The broccoli and cabbage did much better than I expected. The result is spring cabbage and fresh broccoli now ready to harvest and it's almost December.

Broccoli ready for picking 26 November 2006.

More surprising than the broccoli is spring cabbage ready to pick on 26 November 2006.
