A corm is actually a thickened piece of stem that grows underground. It usually is made up of a bud that is wrapped in a papery skin. When the plant bud pushes its way through the ground in spring, the corm shrivels and dies. During the growing season the plant sends food down the stem and a new corm is produced on top of the dead one. Sometimes a plant will produce more than one corm and over time a cluster of corms will develop. Crocus and gladioli produce corms.
